These are letters to Jack, my son, and my daughter, Audrey. You have given me the gift of motherhood. This is just a little gift back. I want to share my experiences with you of your childhood from my perspective of watching you grow - of being your Mom.

Phone Etiquette

Jack,

You are becoming a real expert at talking on the phone. You will put the phone up to your ear and engage enthusiastically in conversation:
"DADDY! YOU WOAK? You WOAKIN', Daddy?"
or
"Gwan-maw, you downstairs? You playin with toys? You playin downstairs?"
Your joy at hearing the voice of someone you love at the other end of the line is adorable. You answer questions with "yes" and "no"s and sometimes I can even guess the questions when you say "watchin cars" or "hot dogs...."
Of course, this early understanding of the phone still shows a lot of room for development. For example, sometimes in the middle of an explanation, you will forget such details as holding the phone to your ear and the receiver will dangle, any response from the person on the other end of the line completely lost to you.
Then, there is the pointing technique where you indicate something of importance to the person on the other end of the line.

"Yook what Santa bwought, Dad!"

Of course, sometimes it's simply:

"Yook! You see dat?!?"

Leaving the person on the other end of the phone to either try to explain that NO, in fact I CANNOT see what you are indicating or to simply agree with you.

This is a charged area, too, because you may be showing the person a picture or something else like a spill and the response will be the same "ooooooooh! I seeeeeeeee!" which can either indicate a lack of enthusiasm about something important or a little too positive of a response to something that shouldn't be well received....

Anyway, I speak with people on the phone every day as part of my job and I have to say that you are one of the most pleasant phone conversationalists I've heard all week!

Parlor Tricks

Jack,

Yesterday was a blast. We went to Borders and Daddy picked up a book he had been looking for while we checked out the tiny toy store AND the bookstore both. We kept ourselves busy exploring both places until it was time to head home for lunch and naptime. After nap, you went with Daddy to the Train store and played for a little while and then you came home and we played with my friend, Laura, and her two beautiful daughters, Viv and Lilly. We rediscovered all of your toys and had fun showing off your train table, playing with Playdough and pretending to take a nap upstairs on the floor after making sure that every last one of your toys was on the floor with you. After our playmates left, we gorged on pizza, and then we headed off to Target to get Mommy some lemonade and to show for things we didn’t need. I browsed the sales racks in the women’s department for cute Isaac Mizrahi clothes that might be on sale. I DID find a couple of things since I know you were dying to know the answer to that question. :)Before we even headed to Target, we were all a little silly from the pizza and fun and you were dragging Daddy into your tiny tent and hiding and then jumping on me. Your energy level was off the charts incredible and your Daddy said “Jack, can you say spazz?”SPAAAAZZZZZ! SPAZZ!” you shouted proudly while your Daddy and I started laughing.

“Say ‘I’m a spazz!”

“DADDY AND MOMMY SPAAAAAZZZZZ!”

This just made us laugh harder because you turned the tables on us without even knowing it.I couldn’t resist it and had to join in:

“Jack! Say WE’RE CIVILIZED!!!”

“Weeeee’re CIVILIZED!!!!”

“Jack! Say “WE’RE CAAAAALM!!!!”

“WE’RE CIVILIZED! WE’RE CAAAAAAALM!!!” We were laughing so hard at this phrase by now, you decided that it was the phrase of the year and repeated it like 15 times in a row which made me laugh so hard that I peed a little.

One change of clothes later, you introduced this phrase outside while we were piling into the car. In the dark of night you hollered at the top of your lungs “WE’RE CIVILIZED! WE’RE CAAAAAAALM!!!!”For our next parlor trick, we may teach you how to yell “THIS IS MY INSIDE VOICE!” at the top of your lungs.

I know ... you can thank us later.

Balloon Bash

Jack,

We've found another activity that you love to do with balloons. We've already discovered the joy of bouncing them in the air and bonking people with them, but now we can add to the list of ways that balloons are fun!

If you blow up a balloon part of the way and then smack it out of the mouth of the person blowing the balloon it will fly crazily about the room making a farting noise as the air exhales from it very fast and you can laugh yourself silly.

Guess how we discovered this? :)

It's by far our most requested past time now. This week. So far.

Like Pulling Teeth

Jack,

Tonight was your first visit to the dentist. We talked about how we were going to the Teeth Doctor and how he just wanted to count your teeth and look in your mouth. You were apprehensive, sure that I was taking you to the "Clippin My Nails" Doctor which you would nervously state "NOT Clippin My Nails, Doctor, Mom" and I would assure you that was right. He wouldn't clip your nails, just wanted to count your teeth. When we got there, things looked like pretty smooth sailing. There were Legos in the waiting room and a fish tank and books.THEN, they gave you a tooth brush with an Orca for the handle and your own little sized toothpaste. EUREKA!Your first moment of being unsure was the dentist chair. You didn't want to sit there, but the nurse convinced you to by withholding the precious toothbrush till you sat down. Once there, Dr. Butler came in and you immediately liked him.He even put a plastic glove on his head for the sole purpose of your amusement. It worked. You wanted to do it, too, but then he admitted that it didn't feel great so you probably wouldn't like it.You really liked him (what's not to like?!? He put a GLOVE ON HIS HEAD!),until he wanted to look in your mouth.Suddenly the honeymoon was over and you had this expression that you had been attacked. Your face said what the hell?!?I couldn't seem to come up with any ideas about how to convince you that this was no big deal. Dr. Butler paused a lot and tried to get you comfortable and I tried to talk soothingly and tell you that it was only counting your teeth, but you were sure that something bad was shortly to happen.Eventually, we called it a night. Your eyes were red from crying and you were clutching your toothbrush and paste like they were a sword and shield and your only protection from what was going to happen.Better luck next time. I guess you got away without getting your teeth pulled as we had planned all along.

Jack,

This morning is a New Year and we came down this morning with a whole week under our belts since Christmas and you looked at your train table in total amazement, gasped and yelled "LOOK WHA SANTA BWOUGHT, MOM! I CANNOT BEWEEEEEVE IT!!!!"

Out loud I said "Oh, WOW! You must have been a good boy for Santa to have brought you that!"

but INSIDE I was saying Really? Because I'm starting to believe it already.....
